Kathy Sayce Jewellery Meaningful Jewelry

From very young, mum and dad always encouraged me to get messy with arts and crafts. Recycling scraps, found objects and fabric to repurpose as animals, clothes, and furniture.

My first ever craft stall was selling handmade felt puppets from our letter box on the street!

There were endless egg cartons to paint, transforming into colourful caterpillars and butterflies. Boxes to tape together to make intricate doll houses and dioramas.

When I was 8 years old, long before Instagram reels were even a thing, I recorded on a tape recorder the steps for how to create a robot out of boxes.

Then when I was old enough, dad bought me a copper enamelling set. I spent hours playing around, creating designs in the corner of their pottery workshop.

So, after a few missteps, it was no surprise that I ended up at Uni studying Art Education, majoring in Jewellery Design and Silver Smithing.

Silver Smithing was a somewhat counterintuitive choice.  It didn't come as easily to me as sculpture, woodwork, and design. It took years and years of practice to really understand the process.

And many years on, I'm still learning every single day! That's what has me hooked!

The process of creating handmade jewellery is a continuous journey in experimentation, problem solving, reflection, regrouping, and up-skilling.

Creating handmade jewellery is also about story telling.

Each piece I create holds special meaning.

*The stories behind the pieces.

*How I created a ring inspired by a list of my customer's favourite things.

*The intuitive process that goes into personalising each piece...gemstone and crystal meanings, symbols, and choosing unique stones that reflect the individual.

*How the most challenging piece I ever made pushed me in a whole new direction.
